What is Computer Software? | Introduction to Computer
COMPUTER SOFTWARE
Computer system is consists of hardware and software. Hardware is physical components of computer system. Software is intangible (i.e., can’t be touched). Computer can do nothing without software. Software is required for functioning of a computer. Hardware of the system cannot perform any task on its own.
- Computer system = Hardware + Software
- Software is set of computer programs
- Program is set of commands or instructions
- Software is intelligence to hardware
- Software is created by computer programmers
- Talent of computer depends on the software
- Make computers simple to use
- Software enhances efficiency of hardware utilization
Software is set of instructions that tell computer what to do and how to do it. Software instructs about the task to be performed. Hardware carries out these tasks.
NB: Different software can be loaded on the same hardware to perform different kinds of tasks.
System software: System software provides basic functions that are performed by the computer. It is necessary for functioning of a computer. System software interacts with hardware at one end and with application software at the other end. System software can be used to develop Application software.
Examples of system software are: Operating Systems (OS), Compilers, Interpreters, Linkers, Debuggers, Device drivers and system utilities. System utility software include: anti-virus, data compression, cryptographic, disk compression, disk partitioning, disk clean, backup, network manager.
Application software: Application software is used by the users to perform specific tasks. It includes office suites and video games etc. Application software interacts with the system software and users of the computer. Application software are often purchased separately. For development of application software
- programming languages, translator software, loader and linker
Following are the list of application software:
- Word processing software (MS WORD)
- Image editing software (PHOTOSHOP)
- Accounting software (TALLY)
- Spreadsheet software (MS ACCESS)
- Presentation software (MS POWERPOINT)
- Media players (Windows media, VLC player etc)
- Educational Software (HiClass, Mythware etc)
- CAD/CAM software
- Web browser software (Internet Explorer, Mozilla etc)
